Removing Invasives/Restoring Natives
Invasive species -- plants and critters -- are a big problem. They crowd out native species, which pollinators need. They are prevalent throughout Lee. While Committee members work to remove invasives on their property and remove them during monthly and annual service days, only an informed, persistent effort by all landowners in Lee can meaningfully address the problem.
To get you started, we held a Learning Event on April 20, 2024 at the Lee Public Library about invasives, including how to identify and deal with the most common ones. The event was recorded by CTSB and you can see it HERE.
Several handouts were provided at the Learning Event. Here's one.
Here's a link to a booklet created by the NY State Department of Conservation outlining a process for removing invasives. Note that the focus is only coastal invasives, but the process can readily be adapted to our area.
We will post more information to help do you part to remove invasive species in Lee.
Once invasives have been removed from an aea, or if you don't have invasives where you want to plant pollinator friendly species, it's helpful to know what those species are. Local nurseries can help and might even have a separate section for natives. We will post information about specific species as soon as we find appropriate materials. Team members have some knowledge about native species - we just planted some along the alleyway next to Town Hall behind the first block of buildings on Main Street (pictured below with team members)
Thank you in advance for your efforts!
