Community Gardens - Pollinator Support

Key components in helping Lee to become more sustainable involve addressing food insecurity, promoting gardening, and supporting pollinators. Lee Community Gardens, lead by Committee member Katherine Miller and supported financially by our Committee - and others, has established and maintains successful community gardens adjacent to St. Mary's Church on Main Street and at Brown Memorial Court on Marble Street. The effort has involved numerous volunteers (including Committee members), educated residents about good gardening practices and the importance of pollinators, engaged local businesses, and provided harvested food items to senior citizens and others. Pollinator support is crucial for the community gardens, for local farmers and beekeepers, and for home gardeners. Our Committee's special request helped place a pollinator friendly resolution as an article in the 2023 Town Meeting warrant. The article passed! One of the initiatives undertaken consistent with the resolution - and led (again) by Katherine Miller - is the plant pollinator friendly plants in roadway verges (the space between sidewalks and streets). Having obtained the approval of the Department of Public Works, Katherine started this effort on High Street - removing the grass, weeding, and planting. With High Street as the pilot - and the model, the hope is to do the same for verges throughout Lee, one road at a time. If you are interested in volunteering to help with this effort, contact Katherine at Lee Community Gardens or look for announcements of the Committee's service days that will include work on the verges.
