Be Well Berkshires was created in 2009 through Mass in Motion funding in the towns of Lee, Lenox, and Stockbridge. In 2011, Community Transformation Grant funds made it possible to expand the project to include Great Barrington and Pittsfield. Since then, BWB has expanded into Adams, North Adams, and Clarksburg and the northern Berkshire Mass in Motion is now part of the BWB consortium. Be Well Berkshires now serves over 70% of the Berkshire population.

Be Well Berkshires is comprised of community leaders such as Public Health Officials, Board of Health members, Town Administrators, Nutritionists, Restaurant Owners, School Leaders and many other interested members of the communities. Be Well Berkshires Senior Leadership Team was created in an attempt to combat the ongoing problem of overweight and obesity prevalence in Berkshire County by promoting healthy eating and active living. By increasing access to healthier food options and by working with municipal officials to implement policy changes in our towns to promote physical activity such as walking and bicycling, we can begin to reverse the overwhelming trend of overweight and obesity and get our community back into shape – one step at a time, one meal at a time.
