After receiving 32 thoughtful and creative submissions, the Select Board has voted to officially name the open space at 300 Stockbridge Road: Cornhill Farm Park.

Congratulations to Maria Hopkins and David Parker, whose submissions were selected as the winning entries! Their proposal honored the deep agricultural and historical roots of the land, offering a name that reflects an important—yet lesser-known—chapter of Lee’s past.

Background & Historical Significance
Maria shared the following historical context in her submission:

From the 1800s—perhaps even earlier—through the early 1900s, this area of Lee was known as Cornhill. Several farms operated on this land, including those owned by the Rood, Hinckley, and Smith families. The Smith property, known as Cornhill Farm, covered roughly 100 acres and was later sold to the Longcope family around 1919. These farms were especially renowned for producing award‑winning corn, yielding high‑quality crops on land with expansive, scenic views. Other crops included potatoes, turnips, and cabbage. Newspaper articles dating from 1871 to 1982 reference Cornhill and its significance. Over time, the farms were sold, the crops faded, and the name “Cornhill” gradually disappeared. Naming the new park “Cornhill Farm Park” is an opportunity for the Town of Lee to restore and honor this historic identity—and the families who farmed the land. (Check out the articles below!)

The Select Board looks forward to welcoming the community to Cornhill Farm Park, where the legacy of the land will live on.

Special Recognition
Maria Hopkins and David Parker will be recognized in the Fiscal Year 2026 Annual Town Report for their winning submission and their contribution to preserving Lee’s local history.
