A greener holiday holiday is a happier holiday

Let’s add joy to the season by caring for the Earth and making changes that ultimately gift everyone.

To the editor:

“I’ll be GREEN for Christmas …”

“There’s nothing like GREEN for the holidays …”

If holiday tunes are inevitably going to get stuck in our heads, the Lee Greener Gateway Committee is hoping these stay in mind. This is the time of year when more household trash piles up than at any other: wrapping paper, gift bags, plastic, packaging for gifts, and food waste being the biggest offenders. A study conducted by OnePoll in 2021 found that we average 43 percent more waste during this season. It also found that people making changes to be more sustainable enjoyed the festivities more; 54 percent thought feeling wasteful dampened their excitement.

There are lots of easy, money-saving changes we can make. The Town of Lee Post Office, Town Hall, the town website, and the town library all have brochures with tips and online links to research more options. These include how to gift our local goats with our delectable holiday greenery (NO tinsel, wire, or sprayed items that could harm them); how to wrap gifts using sustainable materials; how to rethink gift ideas; how to reuse, reduce, repurpose, and, of course, recycle.

Let’s add joy to the season by caring for the Earth and making changes that ultimately gift everyone. “’Tis the season” to rethink this (and be jolly), fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Best wishes to all for a happier holiday.
