Community Outreach - Learning Events, Caring for the Earth Lawn Signs, and more
Our Community Outreach plays an important role in sharing important topics that affect us all, and how we can work together to nurture our planet for future generations. We've regularly used displays at the Post Office and Library, exhibits/booths at the Farmers Market and during Founders Weekend, various publications, letters to the editor and articles in local papers, contributing to Town plans (the Master Plan, Open Space and Recreation Plan, and the Hazard Mitigation & Climate Adaptation Plan), as well as the alternative use evaluation of the Town property on Stockbridge Road. We also collaborate with other entities in town - from the schools and the Lee Land Trust to the Chamber of Commerce, the College Internship Program (CIP), and the Lee Historical Society. Even our zero-waste efforts during Founders Weekend and other special events, as well as our service days involving roadside cleanups, invasives removal, and downtown garden work have educational components.
We've also donated environmental resources (books and videos) to Lee schools and the Lee library. Since 2023, we have been holding two to three Learning Events, and this past year, events were held at the Lee Public Library on the last Saturday of the month in December 2024 and January and February 2025. Our first event, which included the showing of Common Ground (available to watch on Prime Video), was a documentary about regenerative agriculture, was well attended and the movie was informative and compelling. We donated it to the library, so others may watch it. Our second event - a multi-generational discussion -- was also well attended and included participants from AmeriCorps, Greenagers, and staff from Williamstown's Green River Farm, who are leaders and practitioners of regenerative agriculture.
Climate change is perhaps the biggest challenge to continued life on our planet. Keep your eyes open for our upcoming Learning events this winter.
Last winter and spring we presented five Learning Events. The topics are listed below.
- Video Series by Project Drawdown with Group Discussion
- Improving Residential and Business Energy Efficiency as a Necessary Climate Change Solution
- Composting Workshop --Making Healthy Soil for Healthy Food (for more info, click "Food Waste Reduction and Composting" )
- Restoring Native Habitat and Ecosystems

- "Kiss the Ground" Award Winning Documentary & Film Discussion and the prequel to Common Ground
Following the theme of Caring for the Earth One Action at a Time, we've engaged with landowners who have agreed to place our lawn signs containing the image to the right on their property to help spread the world. We've also started using A-frames and banners to communicate key messages that we hope will be helpful as we strive to have Lee be more environmentally friendly and sustainable.
We'll continue to use various means for community outreach and welcome suggestions of how we could do more and do it better.
